Ah yes, the smell of fear still lingers in my wetsuit tonight as I hang it
out to dry.
Another mad day on Brighton seafront, dodging the shorebreak and closed-out
waves.
I sailed the Evo74 with a 4.7m sail but could at times have been on a 4.2.
The wind was a bit too onshore for the two or three hour session to be
classic and I kicked myself for having turned down a lift to Shoreham –
where the extra 10 degrees on the coast line might have made all the
difference in the SSW wind.
At low water we also had the worst longshore rip between the piers I have
yet experienced. And whereas launching after 3pm was quite easy, getting
planing on the inside was not. It didn't help that the tidal range was so
big that it went out to the point where you could stand up half way out to
the end of the pier. (Except you couldn't because of the trashing waves and
a rip current of about 8 or 10 mph that whipped your feet from the seabed.)
The resulting sea was a mess – like when you flood the kitchen with the
washing machine after having used too much soap powder. But I guess the
waves were OK for jumping and bashing.
In all, a gusty wind, and not the biggest waves for Brighton, but great to
be back on the water in proper wind after such a wait.
Same again tomorrow, I reckon, but bigger sails and a better
direction. I might head somewhere like Littlehampton.
Could be classic....
PS.
My mum has just read this. And she says the smell in my wetsuit is
not 'fear' – it's urine. Not mine, surely?
